Naming the Sets (back to setting tutorials)

Every coach will have a different numbering system for their sets. Before the ball is served by the opposing team, the setter makes eye contact with each of her hitters and gives them a hand signal signifying what set to expect.

Some sets require the hitter to leave early and get in the air before they see where the set is going. This is true of a shoot, a 1 and a C. Just take your approach and make sure you leave room between you and the net. Get in the air, arm high and wait for her to push the ball to you.

You MUST go for the set you were assigned. For instance, if you were told to go for the 1, the setter may be planning to set the 2 over your head to another player. Or, she may want you to come for the 1 so the block stays with you and she can quickly shoot the ball outside to a hitter that will now only have to contend with one blocker.

The pump fake is when the middle hitter comes in for a 1, pretends to jump to make the middle blocker jump, then bends down again and jumps to hit a 2.

The "X" is when the middle hitter comes in for a 1 and the right side hitter swings around and hits the 2.

The slide is when the middle hitter comes around behind the setter with a fast, one foot take off to hit. Usually the slide is used when the setter is front row and no one is on the right side hitting.  It is especially effective if the setter jump sets to fake the dump on two, but then sets the slide to the middle blocker coming around behind her/him.
